Should women realistically expect the same respect from men they have "gone through their progressions with"?

I'm no longer in the dating game - but when I was I had a simple rule: don't look back. If a woman, for any reason, chose someone else over me I would wish her well, but I would also no longer consider her as a potential date in the future. I found it an effective deterrent of the kind of abuse that you describe.
