What books would you recommend?

I haven't read Play It As It Lays, but Didion is a reliably good writer. Lolita is a masterpiece. There are a number of ways to understand it. I'm sure you'll find one of your own. Both of the others are wonderful books, each in their own ways, and well worth reading, if for no other reason than to understand the many references made to them throughout our culture.
